Celebrating Matariki with a DRUM wave
We marked Matariki ki Pōneke with two performances of rhythm-based music created for the occasion by the New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī.
Members of the Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington community gathered alongside the public on the Wellington waterfront on Thursday 23 June to celebrate Matariki with a DRUM (Distributed Rhythms United Mix) Wave.
Two performances of the DRUM Wave were held outside Te Papa Tongarewa as part of the Matariki ki Pōneke celebrations presented by Wellington City Council.
The DRUM Wave was created by New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī director Professor Sally Jane Norman in collaboration with composer Riki Gooch. It celebrated the University’s strong connection to the capital city as it commemorates its 125th anniversary.
